Book of Nature
| Natural Education Advantages
Every day nature is a book that lies open before your eyes, and from it you can learn the wonders of eternal wisdom engraved by the Creator in each stone, in each flower and in each star. If your eyes are not able to see or your ears to hear, this is because you are too busy with useless and even harmful activities. You may say, ‘But these activities please us.’ Yes, but everything that pleases you is not always good for your evolution. When you decide to sacrifice some unhealthy pleasures, you will release wonderful energies: your eyes and ears will open, and the book of nature will reveal itself to you.
When you are faced with certain problems in life, you say, ‘Why can’t I solve them? Other people can but not I!’ It is simply because you still look for inferior pleasures, which undermine your energy. That is why there is none left for your inner ears and eyes. Release these energies so that they may awaken your spiritual centres on higher levels. (O.M. Aïvanhov)
Every soul born with a mystical tendency is constantly drawn toward Nature, ..., from the moment man’s eyes open and he begins to read the book of Nature, he begins to live; and he continues to live forever. (Hazrat Inayat Khan)
Many people believe that their intellect can guide them, open up new horizons to them and give them the key to the great mysteries. Yet more and more human beings are forced to acknowledge that it is not through their intellect that they will find peace and happiness. On the contrary, instead of giving meaning to their life, science and philosophy often dry up their springs, cut them off from their roots, and throw them into a fearful state of inner disarray. This is why, if you want a new life to open up before you, you must stop putting the intellect first, and begin to manifest the qualities of the heart – kindness, tolerance and generosity – for it is these qualities that give true meaning to life. (O.M. Aïvanhov)
Come forth into the Light of things,
Let Nature be your Teacher.
She has a world of ready wealth,
Our minds and hearts to bless...
Sweet is the lore which Nature brings;
Our meddling intellect
Mis-shapes the beauteous forms of things...
Come forth, and bring with you a heart
That watches and receives.
(William Wordsworth, adapted from The Tables Turned)
Get into the habit of observing and listening to the life of nature: to stones, plants, animals, but also to the four elements – earth, water, air, fire – and the different forms in which they appear: rocks, sand, rain, snow, wind, clouds, sun, stars and so on. There are so many things to study and interpret!
Just look at the shape, colours and density of clouds: sometimes they appear like cavalcades, battles, feasts... It is the spirits of the air, beings we call sylphs or elves, at work. There is quite a life up above, which expresses itself through a vast number of shapes: faces, birds, flocks of sheep, landscapes... There is even writing we still do not know how to decipher. But it does not matter, the essential thing is to let oneself be impregnated consciously by all these images, for this is how we make contact with the life of nature. (O.M. Aïvanhov)
